Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have my piano tuned?

The Pianoforte Tuners’ Association recommends that pianos should be tuned at least every 6 months. New pianos or those in frequent use may benefit from more frequent tuning. Changes in humidity and temperature can affect tuning stability and regular maintenance helps keep your piano sounding its best.

My piano hasn’t been tuned in years. Can it still be tuned?

Yes, in most cases it can. If it’s been a long time, your piano may need a pitch raise first—a preliminary adjustment to bring the strings closer to standard pitch before fine tuning. We’ll need to assess your instrument and recommend the best approach.

How long does a tuning appointment take?

A standard piano tuning typically takes about 1 to 2 hours. If your piano needs additional work, such as pitch correction or minor repairs, it may take longer. We always aim to work efficiently while giving your piano the attention it needs.

Do I need to prepare anything before my piano is tuned?

The top of the piano should be clear. Please make sure the area around the piano is clear and quiet during the appointment. Turn off TVs, music, or other background noise. It helps the tuner to hear accurately and work without distractions. We need to remove sections of the case of the piano and these can be heavy and polished so if you have a pet it’s better to keep them in another room. You don’t need to remove anything from the piano itself – just a tidy space is perfect!
